History

The M&D and East Kent Bus Club’s name originates from the two bus companies that between them ran a large proportion of the bus services in Kent and East Sussex whose successors are now provided by Arriva and Stagecoach.

Maidstone & District (founded in 1911) covered a large part of West and Mid Kent now served by Arriva, as well as the Hastings and Rye areas of East Sussex that now fall within Stagecoach’s area of operation. East Kent Road Car Company (formed in 1916) became part of Stagecoach in 1993, but though now trading as Stagecoach South East, the company itself continues to exist.
